1799 開湯1200年以上の歴史を持ち、古くから多くの旅人を癒してきた温泉郷。四季折々の渓谷美を見せる箒川（ほうきがわ）に沿って、11の温泉地が点在している。明治から昭和にかけて、皇族や夏目漱石、谷崎潤一郎などの名だたる文人墨客が訪れ、今の歴史が残っている。
1799 那須疏水による開拓事業により開発が進められ、明治中頃の鉄道開通を機に、急速に黒磯が発展を始めた。
1799 町の東側にある鍋掛には、旧奥州街道が通り、松尾芭蕉も奥の細道の道中訪れたとされる句碑が今なお残っている。
