History
The Norwegian Polar Institute was established in 1948, evolving from the Norwegian Svalbard and Arctic Ocean Survey founded in 1928, and later became the directorate responsible for administering Bouvet Island's nature reserve and operating the seasonal Norvegia research station there.
Bouvet Island and its territorial waters were protected as a nature reserve in 1971, with the Norwegian Polar Institute serving as the regulatory and management authority for the island.
