Viking Line traces its origin to Rederi Ab Vikinglinjen, established in 1959 by maritime professionals from the Åland Islands, which bought the SS Dinard (renamed SS Viking).
In 1995 SF Line changed its name to Viking Line.
In 2022 Viking Line acquired a 17.1% stake in Rederiaktiebolaget Eckerö.
