Our roots in Europe can be traced back to Luitpold-Werk, a pharmaceutical company founded on 22 January 1910 in Munich, Germany. |

The company moves several times before establishing its first factory on Munich’s Zielstattstrasse in 1928 – the same street where our European headquarters are located today. By this time, the number of employees has increased to more than 100. |

By 1942, the number of employees has risen to about 300, even though raw materials are hard to obtain and export is limited. |
| 1943 |
In 1943, Munich is bombed, and the facilities on Zielstattstrasse are destroyed. Business activities continue as far as possible, with departments moving to ten temporary offices and laboratories across the city. The company decides to build new production facilities in Pfaffenhofen. |
| 1950 |
At the end of the Second World War, business activities have to be halted for several weeks. In the 1950s and 1960s, Luitpold-Werk establishes new offices in Munich and new production facilities in Pfaffenhofen. |
| 1962 |
From 1962 onwards, the Luitpold-Werk increases its international presence and establishes affiliates in Brazil, Spain, Switzerland, and Italy. A second production site is built in Altkirch, France. |

From 1981 to 1986, subsidiaries are established in the United States, Portugal, and the United Kingdom, further increasing Luitpold’s international presence. |

Sankyo establishes subsidiaries in New York and Düsseldorf, allowing overseas clinical trials and expanding its international operations. |

Sankyo acquires Luitpold-Werk, gaining a presence in Europe and Latin America. |

Luitpold-Werk is renamed as Sankyo Pharma. |

Sankyo launches olmesartan (Olmetec in Europe, Benicar in the US) and acquires Paris-based Laboratories Fornet to expand in the French market. |

Sankyo and Daiichi establish a joint holding company in Japan named Daiichi Sankyo Company, Limited. The European merger follows one year later. |

Daiichi Sankyo acquires U3 Pharma in Germany and the marketing rights for Evista (raloxifene), establishing growth in Europe. |

Efient (prasugrel), an antiplatelet agent, is launched in several European countries. |

Following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Daiichi Sankyo Europe offers support and launches 'Daiichi Sankyo Children Aid' to help Japanese children affected by the disaster. |

Daiichi Sankyo presents Hokusai-VTE, a phase 3 study of edoxaban, at the ESC congress in Amsterdam. Later, results from the ENGAGE AF-TIMI 48 study are announced. |

Daiichi Sankyo acquires Ambit Biosciences. A new Pharmaceutical Development building is inaugurated at the German plant in Pfaffenhofen, providing a state-of-the-art environment for 100 employees. |

Edoxaban, an oral factor Xa-inhibitor, is approved in the European Union and introduced in the first markets. |

Daiichi Sankyo concludes a Europe-wide commercial licensing agreement with Esperion for oral bempedoic acid and its fixed-dose combination with ezetimibe. |

Bempedoic acid and its fixed-dose combination with ezetimibe are approved in the European Union in April 2020, later introduced into the market in late 2020. The company also launches relief efforts across Europe in response to COVID-19. |
