1944 1944年、ドイツの化学者であるA.BrennerとG.Riddellは金属パイプ内面にニッケル-タングステン合金のめっきをする際、次亜リン酸塩を加えた電解液を用いたところ、金属管の内壁のみならず外壁にもめっきが付き、さらに電流効率が120％に達するといった異常現象を発見した。
1947 1947年、米国のGATC社のG.Gutzeitらが、A.BrennerとG.Riddellの発見したカニゼンめっき(無電解ニッケルめっき)の研究に着手し、EAST-CHICAGOのパイロットプラントにて研究を続けた結果、1952年についに現在のカニゼンめっき(無電解ニッケルめっき)を完成させた。
