2010年、キヤノン株式会社が世界初となるブランドTLD『.canon』の申請を表明し、ブランドTLDの申請活動が始まりました。

2010年から2012年にかけて、ICANN会議や国際会議に参加し、『.shop』の訴求活動を行い、世界中のEコマース団体から支援・推薦を得ました。

After the ICANN announced that it would open up an application round for new gTLDs, GMO Registry began preparing to apply for new gTLD .shop. The company began to forge ties with ecommerce associations around the world to better understand how we could serve the ecommerce community. At the same time we hosted a series of events at ICANN meetings around the world where we announced our plans for .shop to the domain community on a global scale.

2011年11月、GMOレジストリは、東京のメトロポリタン政府から公式の支援を受けて、.tokyoの運用を開始しました。これは、東京のコミュニティと経済に貢献し、都市のオンラインブランドを国内外で構築するビジョンを提示した結果です。

2012年3月、横浜市と名古屋市よりそれぞれ「.yokohama」「.nagoya」の管理事業運営者として支持を受けました。

GMOレジストリは、横浜市と名古屋市から公式の支援を受けて、Geo TLDs .yokohamaと .nagoyaを取得しました。

GMOレジストリが最初に .shop のレジストリ運営者になる申請をしてから4年後、eコマースの新しい拠点を築くというビジョンのもと、GMOレジストリは、14時間にわたるICANNの公開オークションで6つの他の申請者と競い合い、最終的に4,150万ドルという記録的な価格で .shop の運営権を獲得しました。

2016年1月28日にICANNオークションで「.shop」の権利を落札しました。

オークション開始から約9時間が経過した、午前9時50分―14ラウンド目で当社の落札が決定しました。
